If you intend to use the European Inland Waterways you must have your International Certificate of Competence (ICC) validated for inland waterways.
Applicants requiring a certificate valid for inland waters must be over 16 and must pass a test on the CEVNI rules (European Inland Waterways Regulations). This is a multiple choice question paper based on the rules laid out in the book European Waterways Regulations.
You can take the test online here by following these steps.
1. First learn the CEVNI rules. The RYA book 'European Waterways Regulations' has all the information you need to learn the rules. You can order it now from the RYA shop by following the link on the right.
2. Next pay £ 20 for the online test by clicking the PayPal link below. When you have paid for the test you will receive an enrolment key by e-mail for immediate access to the test.
3. Now click this link RYAInteractive to register for the CEVNI Test. Register your details by clicking 'Login' in the top right corner of the home page, and then clicking 'Create new account'. Select Cricklade Sea School as your training centre.
4. Practise the CEVNI Test on RYAInteractive as many times as you wish by clicking 'Try the test', do not use the enrolment key until you are ready to take the test.
5. When you are confident of your knowledge of the CEVNI rules click 'Take the Test' enter your enrolment key and do the online Test.
6. Once you have completed the CEVNI test, you will be told immediately whether you have been successful or not. Successful candidates should follow the on-screen instructions for details of how to get your ICC validated for inland waters.
If you have any RYA practical boating certificates you may be able to apply to the RYA for an ICC using your certificate as evidence of competence by completing the RYA ICC application form. You will still need to pass the CEVNI test to have it validated for inland waterways. You can read the RYA guidance on how to obtain an ICC here.
